“A picture is nothing but a bridge between the soul of an artist and that of the spectator.” a quote from Eugene Delacroix. Painting, especially plein air, has become a spiritual event for me. If I can capture the feeling of a particular subject and convey that to the viewer, I feel I’ve been successful.
I grew up in the Black Hills of SD. I’ve lived in Colorado, North Dakota and Nebraska where I enjoyed capturing the landscapes and other interesting subject matter from those areas. I was the founder of Prairie Winds Art Center in Grand Island in 1996. In 2001 we moved back to the Black Hills where I’ve become involved in painting “Plein Air” as well as in my home studio.
I was the art director at the BH Children’s Home for 5 years and on the roster of SD Artists in the Schools for 10 years. I’m currently living in Rapid City SD. I’m a signature member of Artists of the Black Hills and enjoy painting in the Black Hills but also take every chance I get to travel and paint in other states.
Some of my awards: Best of Show BHPAPO 2023; Artists Choice and Peoples Choice awards BHPAPO 2023 Hill City SD; Best of Show 2021 Black Hills Plein Air Paint Out, Hill City SD; Poster Award 2018 Fairplay Co Plein Air event, two Best of the Day Awards Fairplay Co 2018; and being accepted into the San Luis Obisbo CA Plein Air, Paint the Peninsula plein air event Washington state and Livingston Mt Plein air event 2021 and 2022. I’ve been accepted into the SD Governors show 3 times from 2010-2022.
Currently I have work in the Lead/Dwd Art Center, Lead, SD; Art Nest, Spearfish, SD; Prairie Berry Winery Hill City, SD; Livingston Center for the Arts Livingston Mt.; Gillette Wy AVA Art Center and Brookings SDSU gallery.
